Why Start A Mom Blog: 3 Reasons To Get You Writing Today
I get asked all the time how to start a mom blog. After I give my typical answer “anyone can start a mom blog!” I realize I should probably give a little bit more info. I mean it’s true, anyone can start a mom blog. Anyone can type up their thoughts and opinions and share them online. But creating a more meaningful blog space requires a longer answer than just that. I think it’s important I start with the question “what do you hope to get out of starting a blog?” What I mean is, why do you want to blog?
- Do you want to use it to document your life?
- Are you using it only as a creative outlet?
- Do you want to make money from it?
- Do you want to connect to others that have similar interests as you?
- Do you love writing and want to keep your writing skills sharp?
What I discovered Blogging
I blog for all of the reasons above; however, I didn’t have all those reasons in mind when I first decided to start blogging. When I decided I wanted to start a blog I did so because I love to write and I wanted a space to share my creative DIY projects (hence the blog name). I would search Pinterest for home improvement ideas, read blogs of other DIY enthusiasts and think, “I want to share my projects, too!” So, that’s what I did… and then something really great happened.
What happened when I started blogging? Within a year or so of starting my blog, I realized three important things in this order, 1. I could make money by blogging, 2. I could document my pregnancy journey, and 3. I could connect with other moms and share ideas and support one another.
All three of these realizations help make my blog what it is today. I will say, my blog is not perfect — it is far from it. It is always a work in progress. Why? Because so much of the time I come across new and exciting info on blogging and I apply what I learn to my own blog. My blog doesn’t look a thing like it used to, especially when I first launched it.
I’ve learned so much in the past (almost) three years of blogging.
I will admit, there was a time when I completely neglected my blog. Basically the entirety of my first trimester being pregnant. I was unmotivated to do ANYTHING. I was sick and exhausted all the time. Blogging went on the back burner up until my second trimester kicked in. I got back my energy and I realized I wanted to document this important and exciting time in my life. Since then, I’ve continued to document my motherhood journey and I am so happy I have.
How To Make Money with a Mom Blog
Discovering all three of these things completely transformed the way I blogged. Let’s start with number 1: making money blogging because I know that’s the only reason some of you are here — and that is perfectly OK! Once I realized I could make money blogging I heavily researched into it and couldn’t stop reading income reports. I KNOW I am not alone.
It can be hard to give someone a simple answer when they ask “how do you make money blogging?” because with blogging your money comes from a few different income streams.
Here are five of the most popular ways to make money with blogging:
- Affiliate Links
- Ad Networks
- Freelancing
- Sponsored Posts
- Digital Products
I make money blogging with options 1 thru 4. I currently do not own any digital products to sell. Some bloggers make most of their monthly income with their own digital products (i.e. an eBook), so it’s definitely a smart move to make as a blogger, just one I haven’t taken. Yet.
How To Start A Mom Blog
I like to give this fair warning ahead of time: if you want to make money with your blog you must own your blog. In order to own your blog, you must purchase your blog. It is NOT expensive at all. I always say it’s one cup of coffee per month. When you think of it in those terms, it’s no big deal.
I pay for it all upfront for the year and never have to think about it again until Bluehost emails me to renew it one year later. Easy peasy.
There are five basic elements to starting a blog:
- Pick your niche (aka, what do you want to blog about?)
- Choose a blogging platform (this is what you’re paying for: Bluehost)
- Pick a domain name (what’s your blog’s name?)
- Get started with WordPress (the software you download)
- Design your blog
I have a step by step guide to starting a blog. I show you pictures and tell you what to click. I make it quite simple to follow!
You may be thinking, “number one is pick my niche? Duh, a mom blog!”
I get it, but there are a ton of approaches to a mom blog. Do you want it to be 100% personal and share your daily experiences? Do you want it to be strictly educational and take all personal experience out of it? Do you want to focus on one part of motherhood like pregnancy, or working full-time while being a mom, or being a mom to twins, or being a foster mom?
The ideas are endless!
You Can Document Your Life
When I was around thirteen years old I began writing in a diary on most days. I kept this up until I was about twenty-three. Yes, ten years’ worth of diaries. It’s crazy to look back on and watch my thoughts and feelings transform and grow over the years.
That’s what I now use this blog for. To document my life and my motherhood so that I can always look back on it. Just like my diaries, I’m sure some of these posts will be absolutely embarrassing to look back on in the future, but I am glad I have a dedicated space to create and document my memories again.
Having a blog kind of forces me to document my days. It gives me a reason to take more pictures and write more of my feelings down. It’s actually therapeutic.
I am really thankful I was able to get my butt back into gear once I started my second trimester. I love looking back on all my pregnancy posts and watch my bump grow. And now with my baby boy, I love looking at the monthly updates I write and seeing how big he is getting next to his letterboards. Plus, I’ll always be able to remember what milestones he reached every single month.
You Can Connect With Other Moms
I wasn’t expecting to find such authentic support in the world of social media. Social media can be scary. Everyone is hiding behind their devices and using them as a shield while they say anything and everything that comes to mind.
There really are genuine mom bloggers out there ready to support your ideas and give feedback when you ask for it. A lot of mom bloggers that I have connected with are Stay At Home Moms, which is always a great reason to start a blog (hello, extra income!). Being a SAHM can be super lonely at times, so having mom blogger friends, even if it’s just over a screen, can help alleviate some of that loneliness.
If you are a mom blogger (or soon to be mom blogger) and are looking to connect, you can comment below, email, or connect with me on any of my social channels!
