Thrifty Lit: Outlander’s The Fiery Cross
It’s no surprise that I love love love Outlander. A few months ago I came across the most gorgeous Outlander-inspired book jackets from Juniper Books. They offer the option to buy both the jackets and the hardback novels—or just the dust jackets (which come at a significantly lower price).
As a proud thrift book lover, I made it my personal mission to find the entire Outlander series in hardback at thrift stores and then purchase only the book jackets. How hard can it be, right?

Well, it turns out, harder than I expected. To my dismay, it wasn’t an instant find. Each thrift store trip was filled with hope as I walked in, and disappointment as I walked out empty-handed.
But then, after several months of searching, it finally happened—I stumbled upon my first one: The Fiery Cross, the fifth book in the series.
The gasp I let out echoed off the walls of the thrift store. It felt surreal, like a trick or an illusion. I had actually done it—I found something I had been hunting for months. I ripped it down off the highest shelf, exuding both joy and fear that a crowd was waiting right over my shoulder to snag it, too. In my head it felt like an early 2000s Black Friday scene, and The Fiery Cross was the last big-screen TV.
Except, instead of a frenzied mob, it was just me. And instead of a big-ticket item, I walked up to the register and paid a grand total of 50 cents for an overly loved copy of The Fiery Cross. No crowd, no competition—just me and my priceless find.
Afterwards, it found its place on my passenger side seat for a while, as a constant reminder to continue looking for the series and proof that it is possible to find them.
One book down, eight more to go.
