Embracing the Pause: Why It’s Okay to Take a Social Media Break
Have you ever felt like you’re trudging through mud when trying to come up with a new blog post or social media update? You’re staring at the blinking cursor, and words just won’t flow? Yeah, I’ve been there, more than I would like to admit. Sometimes the ideas flow like a bubbly brook and other times? It’s like trying to squeeze water from a stone.
Spring and summer led me to a much-needed blogging and social break, which led me into a more slow-living lifestyle spending all my time outside with my kids, as disconnected from social media as I could be. However, I wasn’t completely immune to the occasional TikTok rabbit hole late at night. Oops! Mindless scrolling can sometimes be self-care, right?
But, if there is something I’ve learned over the past six years of the bustling realm of blogging and social media: It’s perfectly okay to hit the pause button. With the constant buzz and notifications, taking a digital detox can help rejuvenate your mind.

From Pinterest to Passion to Pause
Last summer I felt a strong need to redefine my blog. I was scrolling Pinterest for inspiration to see what was trending, what everyone was searching for, and what I could write about next when it hit me — my blog had become mostly what other people wanted to read, not what I wanted to write about.
I lost what I had when I first started — that passion and excitement to write about the things I love. So, I made a list of all the things I loved, ignored the rest, and began writing. I had passion and drive again, my notes app was what I scrolled through for blog post inspiration. I published a few new posts and then… my laptop broke.
It spent WEEKS in a repair shop before we finally yanked it out and bought a brand new one. At this point, 8 weeks had gone by and I lost all motivation. I felt defeated after finally feeling like I got a sense of self again in the blogging world.
Despite rediscovering my passions, writer’s block hit me hard after being without my laptop for so many weeks. The strain of forced writing weighed on me. My authentic voice began to dim, and every word I penned felt disjointed. Forcing creativity is never enjoyable.
The Beauty of a Break
Taking a break is not admitting defeat. It’s giving yourself the space to recharge, find inspiration, and come back even stronger. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Give yourself the chance to refill. And that’s exactly what I did. I took a few months off, unplugged from the social media I had grown accustomed to, and tried a more slow-living pace at life.
Finding Your Flow Again
Remember, it’s not about how fast you run but the direction you’re heading. Taking a break can offer clarity, direction, and even new opportunities you never considered before. That is exactly what the break did for me. I really got to step back and without any pressure to post and publish new content, I found the clarity I needed, and I’ve never loved my blog more.
Final Thoughts
It’s okay to embrace the pause. Life isn’t a race. When you give yourself grace and space, you’ll find your way back with more passion, clarity, and creativity than ever before. So, whether you’re taking a week off, a month, or even longer, remember that it’s okay. The internet will still be here.
