How to Transition Your Skin from Winter to Spring
Not only can winter can take a huge toll on your mood and motivation, your skin can undergo a lot of damage. Your skin can become dry, flaky, dull, itchy, rough â need I go on? Harsh and freezing temperatures outside, and super hot showers inside: your skin certainly suffers. As spring arrives (it is finally arriving!!) it is important to alter your skincare routine to adjust to the changing weather. As the seasons change, so must your skincare routine. Not all skincare products you use in winter will benefit your skin in the spring, and there are skincare products you need in spring that are unnecessary or can do damage in the winter.
Exfoliate weekly
Winter can take away your skins natural glow. An effective exfoliator can balance the tone of your skin and bring back your healthy and luminous skin. Exfoliators do this by removing the flaky and dead skin cells that intense winter weather has created for you. Skin becomes smoother, refreshed, and dark spots can be alleviated.
A favorite exfoliator of mine: St. Ives Radiant Skin (Pink Lemon & Mandarin Orange). Not only does this smell delicious, but it really works by polishing off the dull flakes and revealing smoother and radiant skin. BONUS: its super affordable. If you are going to be buying new products for the spring/summer and then again for the fall/winter, you donât want to feel like you are constantly overspending. This product will not only work great but it will also keep your beauty budget in check.
Boost your SPF
Warmer weather equals more time outside in the sunshine â itâs a no brainer that you will need to increase your use of SPF. If you are like me, then you enjoy using products with SPF all year round (hooray for ultimate skin protection!). It is important to use a daily moisturizer with at least SPF 15. A favorite of mine: Murad Oil-Control Mattifier with SPF 15. Not only is this moisturizer super lightweight feeling with SPF 15, it helps control oil. I have oily skin ALL THE TIME. This is the first and only moisturizer I have found that actually reduce the shine all day.
Having an oil control moisturizer can be super beneficial for the warmer seasons. The warmer weather brings more moisture to your skin, thus the possibility of more shine. This is why it is equally important to use a lightweight moisturizer as well. A heavy moisturizer paired with the moisture of the warm weather can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. BONUS: a little goes a long way!
Healthy & Safe Color
After hibernating indoors from the cold weather itâs easy to want to stay out in the sun non-stop once the weather breaks. I am super guilty of doing this. I have been an avid sun worshipper my entire life, up until recently. Over the past couple of years I have learned the hard way just how damaging too much sun can be for you (basal cell skin cancer, over here!). When I want to give myself a safe and healthy glow I reach for a few products. FYI â I have sensitive and acne prone skin, the following products DO NOT cause me to breakout.
St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse: lightweight, easy to apply, natural looking, non-streaky, lasts for days â there are so many great benefits to this self-tanner. I have used countless self-tanners over the years and this is seriously the best out there. Before you use this product make sure you exfoliate and moisturize for the best possible tan. BONUS: no heavy self-tan smell!
Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer: I love to use this brand of face makeup because it is hypoallergenic, oil free, and cruelty free. This bronzer helps give my skin a âjust walked off the beachâ look while being safe and non-clogging to my pores. BONUS: softens and moisturizers your skin while adding that tropical glow!
Spray Deodorant
As the weather warms up, the sleeves on our shirts become shorter (or non-existent). Warmer weather means sweating and reapplying deodorant. The more you apply the more you risk having white underarms. It is never a good look to have white, cakey deodorant showing under our arms or on our clothing. I love using a spray deodorant when I wear sleeveless clothing â the smell is wonderful and it goes on instantly dry leaving behind no white marks at all. There are plenty of brands out there to choose from but I personally always buy Dove for the smell and feel.
Lip Care
Along with your skin, your lips need to undergo some care as well. Your lips can become so chapped and dry during the winter months. Did you know it is important to exfoliate them, too? Lips need to be moisturized and protected, just like your skin. Look for lip balms that include SPF. A favorite of mine: Sun Bum Lip Balm, SPF 30. This brand has a few six different flavors, but my favorite is Coconut: it smells just like the beach.
