I still vividly recall those lazy summer days when I was around eleven, glued to Turner Classic Movies for summer break. Back then, finding out what was playing meant tuning in to the TV guide channel. Armed with a pen and paper, I meticulously noted down dates and showtimes during the commercial breaks. The simplicity of those times is strikingly contrasted with today’s instant access to schedules by a mere click on the remote. Not to mention we can pretty much watch whatever we want whenever we want.
My youthful obsession revolved around vintage films, spanning the glorious era of the 1920s to the 1960s. There was something irresistibly captivating about those old movies that lifted my spirits. Perhaps it’s the charm of black and white cinematography, or maybe it’s the effortless acting, but these films always left me enchanted. A Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movie could set me singing and imagining tap dancing for the rest of the day. Shameless, right? Who could resist the joy of that dynamic duo?
I Discovered Audrey Hepburn
During those days, there wasn’t a movie I wouldn’t watch. I didn’t have a specific favorite actor or genre; I simply yearned to immerse myself in the allure of old Hollywood glamour. It was a regular day when I stumbled upon “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and that’s when my admiration for Audrey Hepburn truly ignited. Her presence exuded grace, talent, and undeniable beauty. Furthermore, her tall, slender frame and size 10 feet were like a beacon of hope for me, a gawky tween who felt out of place due to her height, thinness, and ever-growing feet.
I dedicated countless hours to researching her life, delving into books about her, and making every effort to watch her movies. That TV guide channel was on constant rotation in my household. I even scoured the local library for any Audrey Hepburn films I could get my hands on. But does this pursuit remain relevant today? Absolutely. Over time, Audrey secured a permanent residence in my heart. Whenever her movies grace my TV screen, I’m immediately drawn in. My home is adorned with books about her, a true testament to the impact she’s had on me.
Every time I see Audrey’s face, I’m transported back to that summer, a season defined by TCM and its classic films. It was a time that not only ignited a fervent passion for timeless movies but also sparked a profound admiration for the exceptional individual Audrey Hepburn was—both inside and out.
