I have always loved a good scary movie. I’ve also always loved a good love story. So when the two come together, when romance is tangled with a touch of terror, I’m hooked. To say the least.
Both the hopeless romantic and horror fanatic inside of me are fully ignited.
Sure, Valentine’s Day is usually about swoon-worthy love stories, but what about the ones that give you goosebumps? There’s something unforgettable about love that lingers… sometimes obsessive, sometimes tragic, but always unforgettable.

Love That Lingers
Whether it’s a doomed love story from the start, a ghostly presence that refuses to let go, or a problematic romance that truly defies all logic, these books prove that love isn’t always soft and sweet. No, sometimes it’s obsessive, eerie, and even terrifying and these stories below prove that romance and horror can be a perfect pairing (in books and movies!).
If traditional Valentine’s Day reads aren’t your thing, these hauntingly romantic stories offer a perfect way to embrace the holiday… just with a darker, more chilling twist.
The Phantom of the Opera
by Gaston Leroux
“Know that it is a corpse who loves you and adores you and will never, never leave you!”
A tale of obsession, music, and love all perfectly wrapped in mystery. The Phantom’s dark, all-consuming passion for Christine is equal parts tragic and terrifying, making The Phantom of the Opera quite the perfect eerie romance.
Sleepy Hollow
by Washington Irving
Love is stronger than death, Ichabod. It is stronger than any fear.
Ichabod Crane’s fascination with Katrina Van Tassel plays a key role in this eerie legend of the Headless Horseman. Sleepy Hollow blends romance with creeping terror in a way that lingers on and on.
Interview with the Vampire
by Anne Rice
I love you still, that’s the torment of it.
Anne Rice redefined vampires with this lush, tragic, and deeply romantic take on immortality. In Interview With The Vampire, Louis and Lestat’s complex relationship is steeped in longing, jealousy, and a love that defies time itself.
Carmilla
by Sheridan Le Fanu
You are mine, you shall be mine, you and I are one forever.
Before Dracula, there was Carmilla… a gothic vampire novella centered on a mysterious and seductive female vampire. It’s eerie, atmospheric, and brimming with obsession and forbidden love.
Dracula
by Bram Stoker
There are darknesses in life and there are lights, and you are one of the lights, the light of all lights.
Seduction, immortality, and an undying hunger! Oh my. Dracula is as much a story of obsession and longing as it is about terror. The allure and doomed romances within these pages make it a classic in horror love stories.
Mexican Gothic
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
She had not been in love before, but she imagined it might be a little like this, like the promise of something yet to come.
A slow-burning gothic horror novel set in a decaying mansion with eerie secrets. The romance in Mexican Gothic is as haunting as the horrors lurking in the shadows, making it a perfect Valentine’s Day read for those who love a dark twist.
The Silent Companions
by Laura Purcell
Memory flickered like a tinderbox. She refused to let the flint spark.
A Victorian ghost story infused with gothic horror. When a widow moves into her late husband’s eerie estate, she discovers unsettling wooden figures that seem to be watching her. The Silent Companions is a psychological horror meets tragic love.
The Haunting of Hill House
by Shirley Jackson
Not a love story in the traditional sense, but The Haunting of Hill House explores deep emotional relationships and loneliness. Eleanor’s connection to Hill House itself takes on an almost romantic, unsettling intensity.
I would have loved this to be my home. I would have gladly given my life to it, given my self, my love, my heart, and soul to it.
Do you have a favorite horror love story? Are there any haunting romances I should add to my list? Let me know—I’m always looking for my next read!
